The .SE country-code top-level domain name extension was created in 1986 and given to Sweden. During the first years after its establishment, the registration process was very restrictive, so a very low number of domain names were obtained. Persons were allowed to acquire no more than one domain under .PP.SE (“pp” stands for “private person”). Local presence was a prerequisite, i.e. only Swedish individuals, companies and organizations were able to purchase a dot SE domain. In 2003, however, the registration process was loosened significantly and, as a result, the number of dot SE domains has been growing each year.

At present, anybody can buy a dot SE domain name, which allows you to reach the Swedish web community even if you do not have a local presence.
