SPF, which stands for Sender Policy Framework, is an e-mail security system, which is is intended to verify if an email message is sent by an official server. Using SPF protection for a given domain will stop the forging of email addresses generated with the domain. In layman's terms: activating this function for a domain makes a specific record in the Domain Name System (DNS) containing the IP addresses of the servers which are allowed to send email messages from mail boxes using the domain. The moment this record propagates worldwide, it will exist on all of the DNS servers that route the Internet traffic. Any time a new e-mail message is sent, the initial DNS server it goes through verifies whether it originates from an official server. When it does, it is sent to the destination address, yet when it does not originate from a server part of the SPF record for the domain, it's rejected. Thus nobody will be able to mask an e-mail address and make it look as if you are distributing spam messages. This method is also called email spoofing.
